Partnership: Helping Neighbors Move Forward

For many of our neighbors, a reliable vehicle is more than a convenience. It is how they get to work, care for their families, attend appointments, and pursue opportunities that lead to greater financial sustainability. In the Dallas area, where public transportation options can be limited and distances to and from work are often significant, an unexpected car problem can quickly become a barrier.

For stewards participating in Watermark Community Development Corporation’s Financial Catalyst, vehicle problems can threaten more than transportation. They can put employment, family responsibilities, and financial progress at risk.

“Most of our participants have jobs that require rigorous attendance and timeliness,” explained Hannah Pickle of Watermark CDC. “Even just a flat tire or something that causes them to have to stop and put in oil every hour or so of driving the car can endanger their job because they might be late to work.”

Recognizing how closely reliable transportation is connected to financial stability, Watermark CDC has partnered with Christian Brothers Automotive for the past three years. Through this relationship, Financial Catalyst stewards have a trusted automotive resource as they navigate vehicle purchases and transportation challenges.

For Darryl Collins, a Financial Catalyst steward and member of The Business Cohort, who runs Southside Caterers, a reliable van is essential to keeping his business running smoothly. His experience shows the peace of mind that comes from having trusted automotive professional care for a vehicle that plays such an important role in someone’s livelihood.

“Christian Brothers’ generosity, professionalism, and meticulous inspection gave me complete confidence in my van’s reliability, allowing Southside Caterers to keep every delivery on schedule and serve our customers without any interruptions.”

A Partnership Built on Trust

When Hannah first connected with Jason at Christian Brothers Automotive, she shared more about Financial Catalyst, the people it serves, and the need for a trusted automotive resource. For Jason, getting involved was a natural way to serve the community.

“I’m happy to help people in the area,” he shared.

For Jason and his team, the partnership is about more than cars. It is an opportunity to help people better understand their vehicles, ask questions, and make informed decisions about their care. Car repairs and maintenance can feel confusing or intimidating, especially for people who aren’t sure what is happening under the hood or which repairs may be necessary. Jason wants his team to be a trustworthy resource that helps customers understand their options.

“We’re trying to be that light and be that change and educate people on what’s going on. so they can better understand and then make the best decisions with all the knowledge,” he explained.

That guidance can be especially valuable when stewards are purchasing a vehicle. Financial Catalyst helps stewards make informed decisions by reviewing a vehicle’s market value, examining its Carfax history, and seeking an inspection from a trusted mechanic outside the dealership. Christian Brothers Automotive has become a trusted resource in this process, helping stewards better understand a vehicle before making a significant financial commitment.

As Hannah explained, purchasing a vehicle can represent an important milestone. For some stewards, it may be their first time buying a car outside a marketplace like Facebook or Craigslist, or their first time purchasing a vehicle without taking on a large amount of debt. Having trusted people to turn to for guidance can make an otherwise overwhelming process feel more manageable.

Brandy Guttierrez, another Financial Catalyst steward, shared her experience:

“Christian Brothers was very honest and informative about what was going on with my vehicle. They were also extremely helpful in working with my schedule to get services taken care of. Very nice people and would definitely recommend.”

When Challenges Arise

As Financial Catalyst grew, Hannah saw how vehicle problems could threaten stewards’ ability to get to work and meet their responsibilities. She shared these challenges with Jason, and their partnership helped them explore how Christian Brothers might help stewards navigate these situations.

Even when a repair isn’t something the shop can take on, Jason believes people should leave with a better understanding of their situation.

“At least we’ll know they’ll walk out of here with an understanding of what’s going on,” he said.

For Hannah, having a trusted relationship with someone who understands the automotive industry makes a meaningful difference. As a small team, Watermark CDC relies on relationships with people and businesses willing to share their knowledge and resources to help stewards navigate challenges beyond the team’s immediate expertise.

“We are a small team at Watermark CDC,” Hannah said. “For me to be able to think of someone and say, ‘Hey, I see a need,’ and call up Jason and have a five-minute conversation and have a solution and assistance is so helpful. Having those resources really makes our ministry of transforming economic welfare possible.”

Stronger Together

Reliable transportation helps people get to work, care for their families, and pursue opportunities that support their financial well-being. Jason recognizes that businesses cannot meet every community need on their own. By partnering with organizations like Watermark CDC, local businesses can contribute their expertise while others bring their own relationships, time, and resources.

“We have talent, and we can offer that where other people have the time and the treasure to offer other avenues. So all three of those things put together, then we can create impact and support the community in a far bigger way than each of us could do it on our own.”

Hannah hopes Jason and his team understand just how much their partnership means to the people they serve. When the Financial Catalyst team shares that Christian Brothers Automotive is a resource stewards can turn to, the response is often immediate.

“There is so much stress lifted off of all of their shoulders,” she said. “It is incredibly relieving to stewards to find out that this is an option. It always makes a huge impact when I share this resource with stewards. There’s an audible reaction throughout the room because they’re so surprised that someone would invest in them in this way.”

Through this partnership, Christian Brothers Automotive is helping Financial Catalyst stewards navigate an important part of everyday life with greater understanding and confidence. Their willingness to share their expertise reminds us that meaningful partnerships don’t all look the same. When people and businesses bring what they have to serve their neighbors, they can help remove barriers and create opportunities for stronger futures.
