“I didn’t find God, He found me.”

Growing up in Bonton, a neighborhood in South Dallas, Mark Carter faced many challenges. Resources were scarce for him and his seven siblings, and at an early age, Mark learned to steal to meet their essential needs. While this began as a means of survival, burglary and theft led to Mark’s first incarceration at the age of 18. Mark was incarcerated for nine years, and then a second time for another nineteen years. After being released, Mark knew something needed to change. Soon after Mark remembers “I didn’t find God; God found me.”

Through a series of events and connections, Mark met men through Watermark’s South Dallas Campus who loved him enough to challenge him to be the man God created him to be. In 2020, Watermark CDC supported the launch of an overnight security business at the South Dallas campus. Mark was offered a job opportunity to be part of their team, and has become a trusted friend, partner, and brother in Christ. Mark is currently participating in Financial Catalyst and is learning God’s design for faith and finances.

“This church is going to keep me grounded. When you come here, I want you to feel loved and welcomed. Even though I am on security, I still want to make sure this place grows for God.”
