Two Stories of Transformation: Job Connection Program Graduates in Action

This month, all 13 neighbors graduated from our Job Connection Program’s Work Foundations Pathway. These are individuals who chose to move forward instead of waiting for the “right time” to change their future. With determination and perseverance, they showed up for every workshop, every interview, and every opportunity to grow. Below are two of our graduates stories.

“Being in an environment with like-minded people helped me grow spiritually and reflect on how I was showing up in my own life.” —Keone

Keone Walker

When Keone Walker first walked into Job Connection Program, he wasn’t just looking for a job; he was trying to regain momentum after life had unexpectedly shifted.

CHALLENGE

After losing his job and spending an extended season out of work for the first time in his life, Keone found himself navigating unfamiliar ground. While he did not have an incarceration history, he did carry something that often creates significant barriers in today’s hiring process: a misdemeanor/felony background that required him to “check the box” on applications. That single question became a repeated source of discouragement, closing doors before conversations could even begin.

Still, Keone kept searching.

One day, while scrolling through a community job app, he came across a posting for Job Connection Program. Something about it stood out. He applied, received a call the next day, and soon found himself sitting across from Robert Monroy, Job Connection Program Coordinator, sharing his story honestly and hoping for a fresh start.

TURNING POINT

Through the Work Foundations Pathway, Keone found more than job leads. He found structure, practical tools, and renewed confidence.

Resume writing became clearer. Communication strategies became practical. Even something as simple and difficult as an elevator pitch became a skill he could use. As an introvert, learning to speak about himself with confidence was a meaningful shift.

One of the biggest lessons came through persistence: following up with employers, reaching out directly, and learning how to advocate for himself in a professional and authentic way. He also gained insight into how modern hiring systems, including AI-powered screening tools, evaluate resumes and learned strategies to position himself more effectively.

But beyond the practical skills, something deeper was happening.

OUTCOME

Keone found himself surrounded by a community of people who were also navigating challenges, rebuilding, and pressing forward. Week after week, he looked forward to gathering, learning, and being encouraged alongside others. That consistency and connection strengthened more than his job search; it strengthened his faith.

“Being in an environment with like-minded people helped me grow spiritually and reflect on how I was showing up in my own life,” said Keone.

One of the most impactful lessons was stewardship, not just of resources, but of influence and time. He began asking a different question: Am I pouring into others the way I should?

Keone stated, “You know part of being a Christian is being able to pour into someone else, being able to help others.”

That shift reshaped how he thinks about leadership and purpose.

And then came the breakthrough.

Keone was hired by the City of Dallas as a 311 Call Service Representative in the communications department. After a long season of uncertainty, he is preparing to begin this new role during the first week of June. For Keone, this opportunity represents more than employment. It represents stability, renewed direction, and hope for the future.

“I’m ready to get in there and learn everything that I can. I just want to be a sponge and soak up everything,” said Keone.

But he is not finished with growing.

Keone is already looking ahead to the Career Coaching portion of Job Connection Program launching again this fall, where he will continue working one-on-one with a coach to set long-term goals and build on the progress he has made.

His desire is clear: to continue growing as a leader while living with greater intentionality and purpose.

Keone’s story is still unfolding, but one thing is already evident: what began as a season of uncertainty is becoming a story of restoration and renewed direction.

Daniel Wheeler

“Job Connection Program team,” he said, “did more than humanly possible, bringing each one of my peers and me to a place of being treated, not simply just as human beings, but envisioned as children of the Most High God.” —Daniel

Daniel Wheeler never expected that a cup of coffee and a simple conversation would become the beginning of a completely different life.

CHALLENGE

At 19, Daniel was working at a grocery store, carrying the weight of disappointment, insecurity, and past mistakes that had shaped his view of himself. Like so many people trying to find direction, he had begun to believe the lie that his failures defined his future. Then, one ordinary day changed everything.

As Daniel grabbed a cup of coffee before a hiring event, he struck up a conversation with Robert Monroy, Job Connection Program Coordinator. What started as a casual chat soon turned into something much more meaningful. Robert introduced Daniel to the Work Foundations Pathway, an opportunity Daniel admits he nearly passed up before it even began. “I did not know what that brief connection would become,” he shared, “but a week later I was changing my schedule to take part in a 10-week cohort that I knew almost nothing about.”

TURNING POINT

What Daniel found inside Job Connection Program’s Work Foundations was not just career training, it was restoration.

Through CliftonStrengths assessments, mentoring, and intentional conversations, Daniel began to uncover strengths he did not believe he possessed. For years, his thinking had been shaped by failure, discouragement, and the belief that he simply was not enough.

“We convince ourselves that the values of disbelief and discouragement are who we are,” Daniel shared. “But the people who truly believed in us each week were the ones who proved to me that my walls of disbelief and discouraging experiences did not define my future.”

Week after week, something inside Daniel began to shift.

OUTCOME

Job Connection Program did more than teach practical skills. It gave Daniel space to rediscover dignity, purpose, and confidence. He described Work Foundations as a place where people were not reduced to their past or their struggles but reminded of the value God placed on their lives from the very beginning.

“Job Connection Program team,” he said, “did more than humanly possible, bringing each one of my peers and me to a place of being treated, not simply just as human beings, but envisioned as children of the Most High God.”

For Daniel, transformation did not happen overnight. It happened through consistent encouragement, honest conversations, and people willing to walk beside him until he could begin to see himself differently.

What started as a simple conversation over coffee became the moment that interrupted years of hopelessness and helped Daniel step toward a future filled with purpose.

His story is a reminder that sometimes the smallest moments—a conversation, an invitation, or someone choosing to believe in you—can completely redirect a life.
